How do you tell a man's story when his enemies left most of the evidence? The People Profiles puts that difficulty near the beginning of its Vercingetorix documentary: much of what survives about the Gallic leader comes from Roman writers.
Narrated by Rob Jones and directed by Edwin Elliott, the film follows more than a doomed stand against Julius Caesar. It traces the tribal alliances Vercingetorix had to assemble, his victory at Gergovia and the encircling siege works at Alesia. The final stretch moves beyond his lifetime to Napoleon III's role in turning him into a French national hero, a useful reminder that a historical life and its later reputation are different stories.
"Vercingetorix - The Rise and Fall of Caesar's Gallic Rival Documentary" was the most watched of the week's two uploads, reaching roughly 37,000 views. "Copernicus - The Genius Who Moved the Earth Documentary" followed, shifting from Roman expansion to the astronomer whose heliocentric model placed Earth in motion around the Sun. Copernicus is drawing more daily views than Vercingetorix now, though the earlier Bismarck biography remains the busiest individual upload.
Across the channel, the week brought about 1.3 million views and an unchanged subscriber count. The current daily viewing pace is a little below usual. Among nearby education channels, WatchData also had a substantial week, while Invicta and Answer in Progress drew smaller weekly audiences.
For The People Profiles, October's Bismarck documentary continues to do useful work: its account of German unification, alliances and social insurance is attracting more daily views than either new release.
