Nathan Doan's hidden-talent team gives the wall shooting credit

Doan plays every member of an unlikely gaming squad, from a reluctant shooter to an older teammate whose aim needs instant replay.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,502,702 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (121,380).

Target practice is a problem when one of your teammates thinks shooting the target is morally wrong. In Nathan Doan's gaming sketch, Harold supplies a loophole: bounce the bullet off a wall, and technically the wall did the shooting.

That is enough to get Peta, the team's sensitive holdout, to land a perfect shot. It also gives viewers a supporting character to applaud: the wall itself.

The Short drew an estimated 1.5 million views in its first day, roughly twelve times Doan's usual Shorts start. This is a staged comedy sketch, with Doan playing the captain and every eccentric recruit, not footage of an actual esports team.

Each player has a different obstacle between them and their hidden ability. Harold gets buried in wind speed, bullet velocity and trigonometry until Mr. Ming threatens him with a broom. Suddenly, the calculations take no time at all. Mr. Ming, meanwhile, would rather sleep, but sneaks a shot into a sip of coffee so quickly that instant replay has to establish what happened.

Two other sketches also started unusually fast: one about antivirus software needing an antivirus of its own, and a customer-food skit presented as an impossible eating challenge. The gaming team's estimated first-day audience was larger than either.

Its comments arrived more than three times as fast as on a usual first day. Alongside jokes about Doan having an entire character roster at his disposal, viewers are asking for a movie-length version or a second part. The sketch gives them a specific unfinished thread: Peta discovers that the team's first opponents are his old teammates.

The numbers

The hidden-talent sketch stands out against Doan's usual Shorts start. His antivirus and customer-food sketches also drew unusually large early audiences.
