Every pocket, strap and spare: Steven explains the secret features of backpacking gear

His one new video walks through a full kit, from the big three to the kitchen, navigation and clothing, while a summer trip to the edge of the world's tallest tree keeps finding viewers.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Every Secret Feature of Backpacking Gear ExplainedEvery Secret Feature of Backpacking Gear Explained

"Every Secret Feature of Backpacking Gear Explained" is the only new upload on MyLifeOutdoors, and it is very much Steven's home ground. The chapters run through a whole kit: the shelter, pack and sleep system he calls the big three, then the kitchen, navigation, clothing and a miscellaneous pile at the end. It drew close to 50,000 views on its first day.

The comments read like a trailhead debate. One viewer explains why bottles beat a bladder after a few failures in the desert. Another suggests a backpacking myth worth testing: whether blowing up a sleeping pad by mouth really breeds mold inside it. Others simply share it with a kid before a first trip, or joke about stuffing every single item into one pack.

The channel's busiest video, though, is older. "We Found What They Don't Want You To See", posted in late June, follows Steven to the edge of the closed area around Hyperion, the giant redwood in a remote California forest that visitors are no longer allowed to reach. It has passed two and a half million views and still draws a little more each day than the new gear guide. Between them, the channel is running well above its usual daily pace.

Among outdoors channels of a similar size, the big weeks belong to Farming While Beige and Millennial Farmer, with Steven sitting comfortably in the middle of the group. His Delica film from late August, billed as his big comeback, is still adding views of its own.
