"I went to the White House with an agenda," Stephen A. Smith says. His answer to criticism of his dinner with Donald Trump is that access can be useful without amounting to an endorsement.
Smith has already explained why he accepted the invitation. This broadcast goes further, naming comedian D.L. Hughley as a critic and laying out the issues Smith says he brought to the president. It has drawn roughly 400,000 views in half a day, well beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for a regular video. The comment section is also already far busier than a typical first day.
The sharpest personal remarks are aimed at Hughley, whose community impact Smith questions. But the more substantive exchange comes in an inserted clip from The View: Sunny Hostin asks what meeting Trump can accomplish given his record on race. Smith's answer is not a promise of results. "I don't know. We'll find out, but he's the President of the United States."
Smith then spells out his priorities: Black unemployment, support for historically Black colleges and universities, and student-athletes' rights. He presents the Protect College Sports Act as a way to give athletes a voice, and connects his HBCU advocacy to the retreat from corporate diversity, equity and inclusion commitments.
He also challenges Trump's account of his HBCU funding record, arguing that the funding changes were not simply new money. That is the distinction Smith wants to make throughout: taking the meeting does not mean accepting everything the president says.
