A fly's strange face and two kinds of mites for Deep Look

What does a fly's face do that earns a title with capital letters? Deep Look is keeping the answer inside the video, but the question is working. "This Fly's Face Does WHAT?" passed 25,000 views in its first thirteen hours, the quickest start of the week's three uploads.

The other two are shorts, and both are about mites, from opposite ends of the relationship. The first, posted on September 23, explains how varroa mites can seriously harm honeybees. It has the largest total of the three, but it has mostly settled now. The second, from Sunday, is about mites that get fed in return for cleaning. It opened to more than 12,000 views on its first day and is still collecting a steady stream.

The channel as a whole ran somewhat below its usual daily pace, and the subscriber count held where it was. That matched the rest of the science and experiments group. Dr Ben Miles, Reed Timmer, Cody'sLab and NightHawkInLight were all drawing less than they normally do. For Deep Look, the extreme close-ups of very small animals that the KQED series is known for did their work in a gentle week.
