ISMO's mesh placemat rant comes down to the holes
The Finnish comedian turns a dining-table accessory into an argument about unnecessary housework, and viewers bring their own grievances.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 111,348 views a day, 15 times a normal first day on this channel (7,538).
ISMO | Mankind's Stupidest Invention
ISMO lifts a green placemat toward the camera and identifies the design feature he cannot forgive: "There's holes! There's holes here!" For something sitting between a spill and the table, he considers that a fairly fundamental problem.
In "ISMO | Mankind's Stupidest Invention," the comedian makes his case from the dining table. Liquid goes through the mesh, he explains, leaving the top of the mat, its underside and the table needing attention. An accessory meant to sit quietly beneath a plate becomes, in his accounting, three times the cleaning.
The Short drew an estimated 110,000 views in its first day, far beyond his usual start. The comment section was also much busier than usual, with viewers extending the complaint to crumb-catching crevices, sliding plates and the added complication of a tablecloth underneath.
ISMO often finds his material in the oddities of English, as in his recent uploads about addressing people in Finland and America. Here, he briefly searches for the name of the object, but vocabulary isn't the real obstacle. It's the object's right to exist.
Some commenters offer a defense: protection from hot plates. Others suggest repurposing the mat away from food. One viewer has a different creative solution for ISMO: turn the holes into a song.
