28 charged in California voting investigation, federal officials say
FOX 11's report includes an acknowledgment that a separate list of potentially ineligible voters may contain citizens.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 159,614 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (13,002).
28 charged in California voter fraud operation
FOX 11 Los Angeles puts both the federal charges and a significant qualification on screen: officials have flagged thousands of California voters as possible noncitizens, but acknowledge that some may be citizens.
Anchor Laura Diaz reports that federal authorities charged 28 people with voting and registration offenses under an initiative called "Operation Protect the Vote." At least 11 people were arrested. The charges are accusations, not convictions.
In the segment, Trent McCotter announces the charges against people he identifies as foreign nationals. He also addresses a separate list of more than 20,000 voters flagged as potential noncitizens. "There may be some names on there who, it turns out, ultimately are citizens. We're not perfect," he says. Being flagged on that list is not the same as being charged with an offense.
The report includes competing accounts of the operation's purpose. Democratic Assembly Member Mark González criticizes it as an effort to intimidate Latino voters, while U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian says prosecutors are concerned with counting legitimate votes, not political affiliation.
The Short drew roughly 160,000 views in its first day, more than twelve times FOX 11's usual Shorts audience. Its comment section was also unusually busy, though the segment itself closes with California Attorney General Rob Bonta's office saying there is no evidence of widespread fraud.
