Rogers and El-Sayed court voters beyond their parties
FOX 2 Detroit's report pairs Rogers' emphasis on urban investment with El-Sayed's outreach to Trump voters.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 40,190 views a day, 23 times a normal first day on this channel (1,718).
Rogers and El-Sayed building nontraditional coalitions
Education and skilled trades are Mike Rogers' pitch. For Abdul El-Sayed, the invitation is to people who feel politics has locked them out.
FOX 2 Detroit reporter Amy Lange brings those approaches together in "Rogers and El-Sayed building nontraditional coalitions," covering the U.S. Senate candidates taking questions separately at the Detroit Economic Club, at Detroit's Masonic Temple.
Rogers, the Republican candidate, describes outreach across cities including Detroit, Flint and Pontiac. "If we're going to get our state right, we have to have everybody included in this forward progress," he says.
El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate, points to campaign events across northern Michigan and his appeal to Donald Trump voters. "Our coalition is going to be anybody who has felt locked out by their politics and wants those politics to be unlocked for them," he says. He also says polling shows him performing better among those voters than other Democrats seeking statewide office this year.
The report drew roughly 17,000 views in seven hours, already far beyond the station's usual full-day audience for regular videos. Its comment section was also much busier than usual, though the political arguments there offer little explanation of the candidates' proposals.
Lange's report closes on the outreach itself: both campaigns seeking support from groups typically associated with the other party, including Black and Jewish voters.
