USS Indianapolis, a scapegoated captain and an eleven-year-old's campaign on Forgotten History

Michael Droberg wrote and hosted the long episode on the 1945 sinking, and two shorts on Captain Charles McVay followed it.

Forgotten History spent much of its week in the Pacific in July 1945. "USS Indianapolis: Betrayal, Survival, and a Scapegoat" is the most watched of fourteen uploads. It is written and hosted by Michael Droberg, a Marine Corps veteran, and it follows the heavy cruiser from its secret delivery of atomic bomb components to Tinian, to the torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-58, to the days the survivors spent in the water before rescue came. Only 316 of the crew lived.

The episode's last act turns to Captain Charles McVay, who was court-martialed after the sinking. Congress passed a resolution in 2000 clearing his record. A short posted Saturday picks up that thread with the eleven-year-old of its title, whose school research grew into a campaign for McVay's name. In the comments, viewers bring up a survivor at a childhood barbershop, a newspaper clipping on a grocery store's veterans wall, and Robert Shaw's speech about the ship in Jaws.

The quickest new start belongs to something very different: a Colin Heaton compilation on four political figures, "Most Corrupt: AOC, Bernie Sanders, James Comey & Al Sharpton." Close behind among older videos sits "The Most Terrifying Weapons in Military History," from the Tsar Tank to autonomous drones.

Overall the channel ran a little below its usual daily pace, with subscribers holding level at about 1.1 million. Among the explainer and history channels nearest its size, Geography By Geoff and hoser had the big weeks, while Lindybeige was quieter than usual.
