Video taking off 28x its usual first day

Pereira, Topuria, O'Malley: viewers name the room in ESPN MMA's three-emoji Short

The clip has no words in its title, only three starry-eyed emojis and an Instagram credit, so the comment section is doing the captioning.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 491,704 views a day, 28 times a normal first day on this channel (17,280).

ESPN MMA gave this one almost nothing to go on. The title is three starry-eyed emojis and a credit to an Instagram account, tanquinhojj, and the tags just repeat the channel's name. Viewers filled in the rest, and the Short passed 400,000 views in its first 18 hours. For a channel whose Shorts usually open far more quietly, that is a different kind of day.

What is in the clip, going by the comments, is a back room full of famous faces getting ready for the same card. Viewers point out Alex Pereira and Ilia Topuria apparently just hanging around, Sean O'Malley warming up, and Glover Teixeira nearby. Some say they spot Canelo Álvarez loosening up next to O'Malley. One viewer adds that the room is no locker room at all and places it at the White House. Another explains that this is what happens when fighters from the same corner share a warm-up space backstage.

The most liked comments look back with hindsight. Several viewers joke that most of the men in the room were walking into a rough night, and that only one of them left a winner. The comments came in about five times faster than on a usual first day for the channel's Shorts.

The rest of the channel's week was steadier: Islam Makhachev visiting Kyrgyzstan, and a look back eight years to Khabib against Conor at UFC 229.
