QSSR, Sony's surprise upscaler for the base PS5, lands on Digital Foundry

Rich and Oliver compared it with PSSR using Marvel's Wolverine, in a week that also brought Gears of War: E-Day and Control Resonant.

Ten hours old and close to 300,000 views: Digital Foundry's hands-on with QSSR arrived fast because the news did too. Sony released Quick Spectral Super Resolution out of the blue, a reworking of the PS5 Pro's PSSR upscaler for the standard PlayStation 5, and Rich and Oliver put it under the microscope. They set it beside PSSR and IGTI using footage from Marvel's Wolverine, ran early performance tests on a PS5 dev kit, and saved a chapter for the question half the internet would ask anyway: will it turn up in GTA 6?

The same day brought Oliver Mackenzie's long look at Gears of War: E-Day. It is built on a visit to The Coalition and interviews with the team, walking through MegaLights, hardware Lumen and Nanite skinning before testing the modes on Series X and Series S. It, too, has made a quick start.

The rest of the week belonged to Remedy and the news desk. Control Resonant got two videos, a settings guide with console-equivalent options and a sponsored path-tracing showcase on an RTX 5090. DF Direct Weekly #283 covered Halo's move to Activision, Silent Hill Townfall on three platforms and rumored next-gen teraflop figures. A Q+A followed on PS5 emulation on PC and whether PCs will replace consoles.

The channel is running comfortably above its usual daily views, unlike most of its gaming neighbors, several of which are below their normal pace. Only SpawnPoiint is on its regular footing, and GameTrailers draws far larger totals.
