A Mk1 Scirocco, a 24v VR6 and three days in Sarasota, retold
Deutsche Auto Parts finally tells the whole story of its 600-mile engine-swap trip, including the parts the original videos left out, and viewers keep talking about Jamie.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
The Insane Saga Behind Our Road Trip VR6 Engine Swap
Five years ago, by the description's count, the Deutsche Auto Parts crew bought a 37-year-old Mk1 Scirocco sight unseen, drove 600 miles to a shop they had never visited, and gave themselves three days to fit a 24-valve VR6 and drive it home. "The Insane Saga Behind Our Road Trip VR6 Engine Swap" is the full retelling, billed as including everything the original videos skipped, and it was the channel's only upload of the week.
The shop in question is Elite Motor Works in Sarasota, Florida, run by Jamie of Jamie's Garage, and he is the name the comments keep returning to. The other running thread is Paul telling the story of his own suffering, which some viewers find as entertaining as watching him live through it. Charles, of Humble Mechanic, turns up too, and his temper and his hat get their own share of attention. Several longtime viewers say this was the series that first brought them to both channels, and more than one wants to know which was worse, the Scirocco or the Mk5 R32.
The saga picked up about 40,000 views on its first day and is past 60,000, far ahead of anything else on the channel right now. Next come two of Paul's other cautionary tales: a fan's wrecked Mk7.5 GTI and a Mk4 GLI that kept breaking every couple of weeks.
The channel as a whole ran a bit below its usual daily pace, and subscribers held at around 476,000. Even so, among the car channels closest to it in size, only ReDriven added more views over the week.

Jamie is an absolute unit! Great story!
@speed488See it on YouTubePaul telling stories of his suffering is just as good as seeing him actively suffering while messing with his projects😅

@dongonzulman6478See it on YouTubeThis could be titled: When a project becomes the thief of joy. But also getting to find a Jamie? Totally worth it. That guy is a legend; nothing like memories from this kind of project. Lots of us have pulled crazy days to meet deadlines (making dyno appointments) and those guys are still my buddies, 25+ years later.
@jeffreymoore4132See it on YouTubeKinda crazy to think that was the series that introduced me to both this channel, as well as Charles' channel. Y'all have been a part of my life every week since then.
@zanderxymoxSee it on YouTubeThe truth of this engine swap was the best part. I know it was anguish but must see tv for us
@justinweekes-jwSee it on YouTubeWich car was worse? The Scirocco or the MK5 R32? 😂
@piti_rocksSee it on YouTubeEvery time I'm tempted by a cool old VW, I watch you and/or Charles and I'm immediately over it. Thanks guys!
