Turkey twizzlers or shepherd's pie? Big Nibbles judges Jamie Oliver's school dinners
The verdict arrives inside a minute-long Short, while viewers swap memories of watery replacements and chip shops delivering to the school gates.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 1,031,422 views a day, 14 times a normal first day on this channel (74,464).
Did Jamie Oliver Ruin School Lunch?
The twizzlers come first. Big Nibbles fries the spiral turkey sausages, adds smiley potato faces and a slab of sprinkle sponge cake, and sets out a 2004 school tray he recognizes on sight: "This is the exact school lunch I would have had."
Then comes the other tray. Jamie Oliver's 2005 campaign, which he took to television in Channel 4's Jamie's School Dinners, pushed the government toward nutritional standards for cafeteria food. Big Nibbles recreates a post-reform meal from around 2009: homemade shepherd's pie under mashed potato and cheese, steamed broccoli, baked beans and an apple.
The title asks whether Oliver ruined school lunch. The host does not leave it open. "As an adult with an aging body that hurts if I don't eat right, this is the better choice," he says, and then, plainly: "I think he did a good job."
It is a nostalgic turn for a channel that calls itself the world's most unhinged food creator, and it follows his trip back to the freezer for Calippo Shots in "Food That No Longer Exists." The Short drew about 640,000 views in its first ten hours, a pace far beyond his usual Shorts.
The comments, already more than eight times busier than his typical full first day, tell a messier version of the story. Viewers remember prices climbing, reheated meals that came out dry or strangely watery, and kitchens that could not keep up. Many recall a clip of Oliver showing children what goes into chicken nuggets, only for the children to want them anyway. Others mourn a slushie machine, or remember the local chip shop doing brisk trade at the school gates. One commenter is simply surprised that the curly, barbecue-flavored turkey sausage turned out to be British rather than American.

'As an adult with a body that hurts if I don't eat right' is too relatable 😅
@Feleciapink22See it on YouTubeI remember the school lunches changing overnight. All the nice food was stopped and then it was replaced with healthy salads. I also remember the food trebled in price. The local Chinese and chip shop also made a fortune in delivering to the school gates 😂.
@richcox1981See it on YouTubeI'll still never forget when my school got rid of the slushie machine and replaced it with water with cucumber slices in it. Literally no one touched it. Heartbreaking
@Sunako2004See it on YouTubeAll i remember is that clip of him showing children what goes in to chicken nuggets and saying " do you still want to eat this?" And then the resounding "YES!" from all the children coupled with his disappointed face. It gets me every time.
@sentientdumpstersludgeSee it on YouTubeI used to wait around during lunch period before everyone had to go outside to snag leftover chicken nuggets on Tuesdays.
@teal_m_101See it on YouTubeIt's amazing how the deep-fried, vaguely barbecue flavored, curly-cue turkey sausage is not an American invention.
@pwojo9776See it on YouTubeShef Phoenix and Bignibbles both making home made smiley face french fries in the same day and relating it to growing up. Their British senses must be in sync.
