Miles hands Marques a clutch, and a Miata, in Auto Focus' one upload
"Marques Finally Learns to Drive a Manual" passed 800,000 views in four days, a week after he finally tried a Hellcat.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Marques Finally Learns to Drive a Manual
Can the man who has reviewed half the cars on the road drive a stick? Until this week, apparently not. Auto Focus, the car channel Marques Brownlee shares with Miles Somerville, posted one video, "Marques Finally Learns to Drive a Manual," and its description sums it up in five words: a necessary step in motoring.
Miles plays teacher, and the car is a Miata, which some viewers call a cruel choice for a beginner. The comments are a running commentary on the lesson: the eyes glued to the gear stick, a moment when Miles suspects his student has just found fifth, and a long wait for a stall. British drivers, meanwhile, keep asking how so many Americans never learn at all, and one experienced teacher lays out a step-by-step method for finding the bite point without touching the gas.
It makes a neat pair with the previous week's "Marques Finally Tries a Hellcat," another long-delayed first. That one has settled into a steady trickle, while the manual lesson is pulling in more than ten times as many views a day and has already passed 800,000. An Audi A6 e-tron review, billed as proof that boring EVs mean the good guys are winning, is still finding viewers too.
The whole channel is running at about twice its usual daily pace, and among similar-sized car channels only Exotic Rubber and Софья Темникова gained more views over the week. Junkyard Digs is also having a lively stretch, while Gears and Gasoline is on a quieter one.
