Holly, bald since she was six, tells her alopecia story on ABC Science

The channel's only new video of the week passed 400,000 views in five days, close behind a neurofibromatosis story from the week before.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

"I've Been Bald Since I Was 6 Years Old""I've Been Bald Since I Was 6 Years Old"

ABC Science put out one video this week, and it is a person speaking for herself. In "I've Been Bald Since I Was 6 Years Old", Holly describes living with alopecia from early childhood, and the description lays out the condition's forms: patchy loss in alopecia areata, the whole scalp in alopecia totalis, and every hair on the body, eyebrows and lashes included, in alopecia universalis. It also notes there is no cure yet, only treatments to try.

The film drew about 150,000 views on its first day and has since passed 438,000. Much of the comment section is about how comfortable Holly is being seen as she is. A few men who are slowly losing their own hair write that they can only imagine facing it as a young girl, and one viewer points to a Canadian climber who also went public with her alopecia.

It follows a similar first-person film, "My Body Is Covered In Tumours", about neurofibromatosis. Ten days on, that one is past 830,000 views and still drawing steady daily traffic. Further back, the last part of Dr Karl's Strange But True, on bioelectricity and frog legs regrown with electricity, keeps finding viewers a month later.

With only one new upload, the channel ran below its usual daily pace and added about 2,000 subscribers. Even so, among the science channels nearest its size, only NileRed Extra gathered more views over the week. Just Have a Think and Simon Clark both ran ahead of their usual pace.
