Michael, a long-haired man in ankle chains, is told to go back to October 24th. What happened that night is the question at the heart of Jeremy Saulnier's new horror film Slayground, and A24's first teaser answers it only in fragments.
A crowd chants the attraction's name before a police radio reports "a mass casualty incident with multiple fatalities." A newspaper headline announces that a "Handyman Killer" has slaughtered six. An interrogator tells Michael he was found at the scene covered in blood. A blonde woman presses a crystal to his chest and urges him to "help us bring the light to the truth." His reply comes later, almost under his breath: "I was here."
The bleakest joke takes place in an office, where a worker updates a sign counting the days since the last homicide. It reads zero. After that come home-video clips, police searches, a mask made of skin and a slasher whose angle grinder throws sparks.
The teaser credits Saulnier as the director of Green Room, the 2015 thriller that trapped a punk band in a backwoods club run by neo-Nazi skinheads, and Netflix's Rebel Ridge. Several viewers say they can already see Green Room in this one, while others put in a word for his earlier Blue Ruin. The cast includes Cory Michael Smith, Chase Sui Wonders, Stanley Simons, Sophie Wilde, Young Mazino, Imogen Poots and Matty Matheson, with James Badge Dale and Stephen Root.
The teaser passed 700,000 views in its first 15 hours, and the comments arrived many times faster than they usually do on the studio's short uploads. Much of the conversation is about timing: a story set in late October, complete with trick-or-treaters, will not reach theaters until January, and plenty of viewers wish they could see it in time for Halloween. That whispered "Michael" briefly had some thinking of a very different October killer.
Others are listening rather than watching, and say they hear a burst of Slayer's "Raining Blood" in the closing seconds.
